Happy Friday! Can you believe it’s already the end of August? Seems crazy to me. Today, I decided to tackle making Mullein Torches. Mullein is a biennial, botanical herb that has a multitude of uses. Every part of Mullein is medicinal – roots, leaves, flowers, and seed heads.
First things first…gather the needed supplies into your cleared work area: Mullein seed stalks, beeswax, thongs, drying rack, wax paper, and any herbs or flowers to add to the stalks, if desired. Before starting, I cut the stalks down to a workable size, typically under 6-inches. Then, I start melting the beeswax. Rather than using a double broiler to melt the wax, I use a candle-making pitcher and a freestanding boiler.

Once all the wax is melted, dip the stalk into the wax and set aside to dry for a few. I usually work in batches of 6-8 stalks at a time before needing to reheat and/or add more beeswax. They will need to be dipped and quick-dried about 4 times before adding the additional herbs. After the 4th dip, quickly sprinkle or roll the stalk in the herbs you selected; I chose a blend of rose petals, cinnamon, and sage. I let the stalks dry for a few minutes with the herbs on them before the final dipping. Finally, the last dip and let dry for 24 hours.

That’s it…easy peasy and messy. LOL! I actually had enough melted wax and herbs leftover to make 2 small candles, so that’s a BONUS! In total, I used close to 2 lbs of beeswax pellets for 19 Mullein torches and 2 candles. You can also melt store-bought candles, but I prefer to keep things as natural and organic as possible.
Now you may be asking what is the point of Mullein torches? They are often used to cleanse the air of a room or home, similar to a smudge stick. They are also used during meditation to clear negative energy and allow a pure focal point. They will burn about 1-inch in 10-15 minutes. Tomorrow, I will get these bundled up for selling, as well as burn one for myself. Hope everyone has a great weekend!
