Smooth Sumac
Smooth Sumac, Rhus glabra, is a native shrub to all 48 contiguous states and Canada. It is often recognized for the clusters of deep red berries in late summer to early fall, not to be mistaken for poison sumac that has drooping clusters of white or gray berries. Every part of Smooth Sumac has a history of medicinal uses.

Beneficial Qualities:
๐ Respiratory relief – coughs, asthma, tuberculosis
๐ Diuretic aid – moves excess water from the body, edema, water retention
๐ Astringent – tightens loose tissues to soothe mouth sores, sore throats, and diarrhea
๐ Skin conditions – antiseptic properties to treat wounds, ulcers, and rashes (including poison ivy)
Common Uses:
- Fresh or dried herb, culinary
- Infusion – hot or cold
- Extract &/or Tincture
- Topical poultices
- Botanical dye
